Ulil Abshar Abdalla


Ulil Abshar Abdalla, was born on January 11, 1967, in Cebolek, Pati, Central Java. He pursued primary education at Madrasah I’anatut Thalibin in Cebolek, and secondary education at Madrasah Mathaliul Falah, Kajen, Pati. He then pursued his undergraduate education at the Sharia Faculty at the Islamic and Arabic Institute of Sciences (LIPIA) in Jakarta, and postgraduate at Boston University in the United States. His interests include: Islamic law, philosophy, theology, tasawwuf, Islamic history, Arabic grammar, Arabic literature, Indonesian literature, and science. He has been heavily involved in inter-religious dialogue activities and the Islamic thought reform movement. In addition to teaching in the post-graduate program at the Indonesian Nahdlatul Ulama Islamic University (UNUSIA), he also teaches online recitation known as Ngaji Ihya ‘Online.
