Quirine van Heeren
Quirine van Heeren has been a student of Indonesian Language and Culture since 1995. Over the years she has studied Javanese, Indonesian Islam, and contemporary audio-visual media. From 1997 to 1999, Quirine studied Javanese and Islamic culture at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Central Java. In 2000 he obtained a master’s degree at Leiden University with a thesis on media, identity politics, and the socio-political influence of the New Order Government on Indonesian culture in the analysis of two Indonesian films. In June 2009, he obtained his PhD with a multidisciplinary thesis on contemporary Indonesian audiovisual media. In 2012, Quirine conducted research and script development for the film Kartini which was released in April 2017. She is affiliated with ASEACC, which every two years hosts the Southeast Asian Cinema Conference, and KFEIN, a group of scholars who analyze the latest developments in audio-visual media. In 2018, Quirine co-directed the production of the film Bumi Manusia, which hit national cinema chains on August 15, 2019.
