Alicia Izharuddin


Alicia Izharuddin is affiliated with the Women’s Studies in Religion Program at Harvard Divinity School and was previously Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies at the University of Malaya. She is interested in gender and Islam in Southeast Asia and has many publications on the topic. “Gender and Islam in Indonesian Cinema” is her first book. The first book of its kind, Alicia Izharuddin’s “Gender and Islam in Indonesian Cinema” presents a fascinating overview of how films are made the ‘Islamic’ way. Through Islamic films, it tells the story of a nation in political, cultural and spiritual crisis and its attempts to rise as a key player in the Muslim world.
